Bikeology

Bikeology is about the application of scientific research to develop innovative training methods that enhance children's cycling skills. Through virtual reality (VR) training, we help young riders build confidence, awareness, and road safety skills before cycling in real-world environments.

The Bikeology journey began in 2019 with a simple yet critical question: How do different bicycle lights influence driver behavior?

To explore this, Dr. Dan Bishop conducted an experiment by cycling along a busy rural road in low-light conditions, using various light configurations while filming how motorists approached, overtook, and passed him. The findings were striking—when handlebar-end lights were used, drivers slowed down significantly more than when only a seat post light was present, suggesting a more cautious response.

Since then, Bikeology has expanded its research focus, investigating how:

  • Experienced cyclists’ attentional control affects their likelihood of encountering negative road experiences.

  • Immersive VR training can improve young children's ability to cycle on roads safely.

  •  Virtual simulations enhance teenagers' confidence and attitudes toward cycling.

By combining scientific research with innovative training methods, we aim to equip young cyclists with the skills and awareness needed to navigate roads confidently and competently.

“The immersive cycling experience was a real highlight of the journey for both the girls. The study encouraged them to cycle much more than they have ever done. They cycled on usual roads after the study, something I would not have usually been too comfortable with."
